Box cameras, an accidental find.

Back in 2012 my father got me an artifact from an antiques market: a box camera that was used for street portraits, that contained a darkroom inside its small metal body. An extremely low-tech version of a Polaroid. A whimsical speciation of photographic technology and convenience.

I wrote about this camera HERE, but never took the time to rebuild it into a functional device. Today, in 2026, I accidentally stubled upon InstantBoxCamera, finding that Lukas Birk is now producing and selling new box cameras! It turns out he was one of the co-creators of the Afgan Box Camera Project which–back in 2012–was one of the only resources I found on these devices.

Today Birk is selling complete camera kits from 370 Euro, which is a magical price.
