I set up my first darkroom when i was about 10, and started with a pinhole camera given by Emmet Gowin (made from a film canister), and a Pentax ME Super. In the late '90s I bought my first Leica, and now I also use a dSLR. These are some of the images I have created over the years. In 2004 when I was asked to put a piece in Art(Verona, I decided that there was a good likelihood that there would be a lot of photography in the fair, however I also correctly predicted that it would all be black and white, or digitally composited. To stand out, or be different, my plan was to make a large piece that looked digitally manipulated, but was, in actal fact, a print from a negative. III Stanza was born. 3 double exposed and cross processed medium format negatives. It stood out. We got two solo shows and two art-magazine articles out of my choice. Censorship, or prudeness, is both a friend and an enemy. I am a shy person. Shy about myself. But shyness does allow me to see a vague wall to lean against. So sometimes i will present something where i am challenging my shyness. My prudeness. And I see this as a challenge to myself, not to others. If anyone should be embarrassed, it should be me. And besides, nudity cannot be offensive, as whoever we are, it is the one thing that I know we all have. |
